NCC LIFTS PROMO BAN ON GLO, ETISALAT AND AIRTEL BUT MTN REMAINS BANNED

The National Communications Commission (NCC) has lifted its ban on promotions by GSM Service providers such as Glo, Airtel and Etisalat while MTN remains banned from carrying out promotions.
In a statement, the Director of Public Affairs for the Commission (NCC), Mr Tony Ojobo disclosed that three GSM service providers had met the Key Performance Index (KPI) set by the commission in December 2012 and are now cleared by the commission to carry out promotions. However MTN Nigeria was unable to meet the commission's criteria which bordered on the quality of service provide by MTN to its customers.
Mr. Ojobo said that the ban was as a result of complaints from consumers and stakeholders about the quality of service provided by the GSM Service providers. The promotion ban took effect on 12 November 2012. MTN Nigeria is the largest GSM Service provider by subscribers, accounting for 47 miliion of the total number of 113 million phone subscribers (which translates to 41% of the total market).
