Microsoft gobbles up Swiftkey for a cool $250 million

If the guys at FT and VentureBeat are right, Microsoft has acquired Swiftkey, the company behind the amazing Android and iOS keyboard app. According to reports, Microsoft paid $250 million for Swiftkey and would announce it later this week.

It might not be clear why Microsoft needs to own Swiftkey, but when you think about it about Big Data, considering that your smartphones keyboard is one of the most used app on your smartphone and could easily be used to predict the behaviour of users. Microsoft might not be able to make money directly off the app since it's a free app but data it can gather from users is worth so much more.

The bright side of this deal is that Windows Phone users would finally get a Swiftkey app.
